Peer Education is embedded in MDECC's service delivery as a core
program area with the aim to develop skills and knowledge at the
local level that in turn builds support and change within social
groups and communities.
The Peer Education model has been running at MDECC since 1999
when our first community based peer education model was developed.
The Drug Safety Project (DSP) and Parents Prepared were developed
in response to a local youth needs assessment and community forum.
Participants at the forum identified a gap in drug information and
education for young people and parents. They voted on peer
education as being the most credible education option. The model
has since been adapted and tailored to meet specific target
populations including indigenous young people and those attending
